2009 OceanoGraphy Album

Bert Strolenberg / Sonic Immersion
'OceanoGraphy' is the third release of Synth.nl, aka Michel van Osenbruggen, who got inspired by the earth ocean's and the many sea creatures living in them. The 12 cinematic and melodic tracks with lots of well-chosen environmental sounds clearly show a further refinement of his skills and sounds, creating a nice feel-good atmosphere and open space to dwell in. 'Antartico' starts out nice and very smoothly, carrying a certain Frank VanBogaert-like edge with its warm, encompassing sound, after which the other tracks continue the sonic voyage with catchy sequencing, clear solo voices and thick-layered synth layers. The expert mastering by Ron Boots gives an extra dimension to this well-executed work of spacious mood music, which occasionally contains elements of Jarre and Vangelis. I have not doubt this music will be embraced and liked by lots of EM-fans. Mission well accomplished, Michel!

Behind the modern and recognizable artist name Synth.nl goes the Dutchman Michel van Osenbruggen. 'OceanoGraphy' is his third album after 'AeroDynamics' and 'AtmoSphere'. Michel is somebody who not only creates music, he also thinks about the world surrounding him. The music of Synth.nl brings this together. 'OceanoGraphy' is inspired by the Earth oceans and the creatures living in them. This album is a journey into the deep waters of the oceans. That is something else than a lot of other electronic music-albums that bring us into deep space. The album is endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund that receives a part of the revenue of the cd. The albums opens with 'Antartico'. It is a big sounding piece with a wonderful theme that almost has traces of Vangelis but -in case of melody- also of Michels fellow Dutchmen Peru (remember them?). His music has many faces but in general it has an excellent structured melodical sound that almost has traces of progressive rockmusic. 'Baleanoptera' is a fine example of this. Also, there is a somewhat melancholy thought put into the music. His manages to come with some great synth soloing. Just listen to 'Atlantico'. The heavy symphonic grandeur of Vangelis can be heard again in 'Carcharodon' and in the brilliant 'Indico'. In the positive sounding 'Megaptera' sounds of whales are included in the music. The melody here is very nice. Michel should be capable of making film music. For instance, the title track is very imaging. 'Tursiops' again has a simple but very uplifting melody. On 'Artico' and the menacing 'Orcinus' there is a slight hint of Jean Michel Jarre. The music on 'OceanoGraphy' is somewhat more quiet than on his first two cds but on 'Chelonia' and 'Pacifico' the rhythms from these albums can be heard. Again, mixed with traces of the Greek grandmaster. Michel is a great talent who, with 'OceanoGraphy', clearly has put himself in the bigger league of electronic musicians. And the statement he makes on this album is one that only must be appreciated and followed.

Interesting concept album from Dutch artist Synth.nl is what I am going to review below. This work is dedicated to the Earth's oceans and the creatures living in them. Accordingly, each track is named after a specific ocean or a marine animal. "Antartico" kicks in with an atmospheric intro full of wave samples and gentle pads. A relaxed rhythm starts and a nice melody supports the flow. The mood is that of serenity and a sense of wonder permeates this composition. An atmospheric section follows before we return to the melodic theme. "Baleanoptera" starts with the sounds of whales before mysterious chords provide a nice flowing backing to a funky bass line. A loungy rhythm kicks in and a menacing synth theme plays on top. More melodic themes follow and the track acquires a darkish mood that's something not very typical of Michel van Osenbruggen's oeuvre. "Atlantico" is more upbeat, with a steady rhythm pushing things forward and some nice arpeggios and soloing. I like the lovely analog timbres Michel is using on this track. It also has one of the catchiest melodies. "Carcharodon" - a track dedicated to the Great White Shark - begins with very Jarre-like timbres (think "Rendez-Vouz" pads mixed with "Oxygene" EMS twitters). After a while, a simple melodic theme is heard which is then joined by nice analog bass and a warm soloing synth. This is great EM with a sense of menace lurking inside. "Megaptera", dedicated to Humpback Whales, not surprisingly, begins with whale samples set upon the background of nice pads. The track quickly gains momentum with an optimistic theme that recalls Jarre or even some theme from one of those 80's b-grade movies. A nice change of pace next to the rather austere music that came before. The samples of whale song appear several times throughout this track. The title track then flows effortlessly with a theme so melancholic and bittersweet you'd think you've heard it before. In fact, there's something familiar and nostalgic about it. It's also slightly classically-influenced to my ears. If you enjoy the more melodic / romantic works of Jarre, you will like this. "Tursiops" lifts that atmospheric lever a notch or two, providing a nice experimental sequence / arpeggio, a relaxed rhythm and nice breathy pads. On top of this, a pleasant melody created with a lovely analog timbre plays. There are also lots of environmental samples on this track. "Indico" is the most romantic and soft of the bunch - a slow melodic motif, punctuated by a weeping synth solo. "Chelonia" is dedicated to our best friend in the seas - the dolphin. It's a gentle track with trademark bass arpeggios, a relaxed rhythm and a melody that glides smoothly like dolphin upon waves. A nice lead line is all we really need for an excellent EM track. "Artico" kicks in with the sound of blizzard until various sequenced sounds appear as well as a nice pad. Rich in tone colours, effects and lead lines, this rhythmic track has a strong epic melody that reflects the severe weather conditions that the territory of Arctic ocean is known for. "Orcinus" is the most mysterious track of the lot. Slow, reflective and atmospheric, it's perfect relaxing stuff. Again the programming of sounds is excellent. Intense analog timbres get the closing track "Pacifico" underway. Soon a rapid one-note sequence appears, but as the rhythm and melodic theme kick in, we are clearly in typical Synth.nl territory, which means a tasty and easy-listening mix of relaxed rhythms, great melodies and atmospheric effects. It's a fitting and optimistic way to finish this great melodic EM work. Just like Michel's previous offerings, this immaculately recorded and mixed album was released on the Dutch EM label Groove Unlimited and endorsed by WWF.

When the harmonies meet rhythmic complexities, or when the influences of Jarre cross the romantic arrangements of a dreamy Vangelis, that gives OceanoGraphy. A very beautiful album that depicts pretty well the vision of the Dutch synthesist. For his 3rd opus Michel Van Osenbruggen is inspired by the oceans and the survival fragility of its aquatic fauna. A work which wants to be a intra terrestrial hymn with a strange spatial fusion, supported by a certain rhythmic heaviness which has nothing to do with the grace of oceans. Antartico opens on a very light touch. A beautiful title with a melodious thematic which is near Vangelis style where we can hear a magnificent felted and fluted mellotron pushing this great melody close to New Age territories on a very sensitive and hooking synth and keyboard. A soft track that could make melts the hardest ones. Balaenoptera (Rorqual of the Atlantic Ocean) is quite its opposite and shapes marvelously the heavy movements of this graceful whale. A hiccoughing bassline hems on a synth which undulates in an oceanic background soundscapes. A fine keyboard strums soft chords before the bass becomes accessory of heaviness on a superb synth which drags an impressive sound mass in a fanciful amphibic world. A heavy title, quite as the mega weighting Megaptera, who finds grace on a splendid hemming and coiling synth filled of kiss-curl laments. Loud and atonal, the intro of Atlantico rolls with an extreme gravity on a sea agitated of intertwined waves. A spiraled rhythmic, coated by mellotron choirs and by clacking percussions thus a synth to ascending arpeggios, draw a musical structure that recalls the great moments of Jarre in a halieutic carousel stuffed with heavy twisted solos. With its cosmic approach to thousand striations and shooting stars analog effects, Carcharodon crosses more the space than the abundance seas on a good structure of loud bass with a melodramatic approach. Oceanography divides the opus into two, bringing a less heavy and more harmonious approach for the following tracks, with a synthesized lament which enjoys a beautiful synth to sighs of a faunistic submarine variety, on a slow tempo knocked off by arpeggios that sparkle on a mellotron that shape the movements of tides. There is a beautiful artistic creativity on Tursiops where we hear dolphins sing and to jump on a broken rhythm by a beautiful synth to aquatic waves. After this sweet sea lullaby which is Indico, Chelonia moves with the elegance of marine tortoises on a slightly hatched cadence and a synth with tropical flavor saxophones solos. With its slashed tempo that a hiccough on ground swell melodious synth witch explodes of good solos, Artico distances itself from quieter structures giving to ocean titles of OceanoGraphy. By far, it's the liveliest track on this second half. Softer, Orcinus spouses a dreamy structure with a beautiful piano and a bass sequence which stutters under a synth very near the soil of Vangelis, quite as melodious Pacifico who closes with the same harmonious approach as Antartico had made at opening. When an artist succeeds to sculpture his music so that we can visualize its storyand\or message, we can easily assert that its purpose is reached. OceanoGraphy of Michel Van Osenbruggen (Synth NL) aims right to the target by offering a beautiful and tender poetic music with amazing rhythmic structures, sometimes heavy, slightly complex, but always melodious. A beautiful album which we taste eyes closed with soundscapes and sounding images which will certainly please the fans of Vangelis and Jarre, any areas include.

Michel van Osenbruggen aka Synth.nl has made fun, melodic, upbeat electronic music inspired by a variety of topics. This time out he tackles OceanoGraphy. .Antartico. is very dreamlike to start before a softly percolating sequence bubbles up, followed by a lighthearted, pleasant melody. Osenbruggen excels at creating tunes that will play in your head long after the disc has finished. .Balaenoptera. has a more dramatic, exciting flavor, again very nice on the sequencing, melodies, and various synth sounds. Tracks alternate between this more majestic feel and a more playful tone. Many have a cool pulsating undercurrent like the gently undulating synths of .Megaptera. that keep things moving along. The title track is excellent, starting as a midtempo piece with really nice synth pads in the middle, then it gets darker and more dramatic, followed by a lighter section to finish. .Indico. and .Chelonia. bring things down a couple notches, soft and slow with a relaxed mood. And so it goes from one good track to another, not a bad one to be had here. If you need something to brighten your spirits, OceanoGraphy should do nicely.

This release from 2009 offers 73 minutes of pleasant electronic music. Synth.NL is Michel van Osenbruggen. Aquatic textures waft beneath airborne electronics, bouncy keyboards and stately rhythms to craft pleasant tune age. The electronics are gentle and achieve a balance between dreamy and mildly energized. A versatile array of sounds is utilized, resulting in depth as well as scope. Sweet chords coexist with bass pulsations, producing a well-rounded sonic palette. Keyboards generate pacific melodies through constant key manipulations, relying only minimally on loops. A persistent stream of engaging riffs is delivered, displaying emphasis on compositional dedication over technological repetition. The rhythms maintain a steady locomotion but without becoming too overt. A temperate pace is established. The beats are un intrusive but possess enough substance to lend complementary oomph. While these compositions are all devoted to aquatic elements, that doesn't mean they're all flowy and low-key. That temperament is found in some of the pieces, but other tracks exhibit a degree of understated intensity. These floating melodies are nicely seasoned by spry embellishment, and this state of animation is held in tasteful restraint to keep things affable yet engaging.

2008 AtmoSphere Album

Atmosphere is a great new album of synth music album from Dutch synthesist Michel van Osenbruggen, aka Synth.nl. Atmosphere is a concept album, based on the layers of atmosphere that surround the Earth, the various types of clouds that are encountered within each layer and the sounds of weather that might occur at each layer. The tracks are arranged to follow the layers of the atmosphere, as if you were taking a trip from the earth into space. The 'atmosphere' concept isn't heavy-handed, but serves as a framework for Osenbruggen's music, which is electronic music in the synth music tradition of artists like Tangerine Dream, 80's Jan Hammer and Jean Michel Jarre. The music has a symphonic electronica texture with an emphasis on traditional analog-style sounds. The tracks on Atmosphere are very melodic, without being pop-ish. One of the highlights of the album is Stratocumulus. It features a sequenced synth bass line, a string/brass synth melody line and phased synth strings. Synth.nl builds on this with tasteful use of electronic percussion, effects and a bit of sampled ambient effects. Another highlight is Allocumulus, which has an almost hymnlike quality. It begins by stating the theme with muted synth strings, accompanied by subtle percussive effects. It then repeats the theme in a series of variations, repeating once in an arpeggiated version, and then building to a broader statement of the theme with electronic rhythms and new instrumentation of the melody. Osenbruggen brings back the arpeggiated variation on the theme and then builds the piece back up to another peak. Jarre fans may smile a bit when hearing the track Mesosphere, which echoes the sounds of Oxygene and Equinoxe with its use of heavily phased synth strings and a melodic bass line. Another highlight is Allostratus. It's built around a descending bass line that repeats throughout most of the piece. Osenbruggen gives it a modern feel by using multiple layered basslines and electronic percussion, without taking it into dance music territory. Osenbruggen adds interest through effective used of synth orchestration and the use of several breaks. Overall, Synth.nl.s Atmosphere is a treat for synth fans. Osenbruggen's style of symphonic electronica will appeal to fans of classic synth music and space music artists of the late 70's and 80's but it's not too hard to imagine these tracks being remixed as dance music, too.
Alejandro Hinojosa
The style of this work is situated on the border between Synth-Pop and the most futuristic areas of Techno. Also there are some traits from Space Music, that contribute to enrich the pieces. Almost all the music is very dynamic, with powerful rhythms, although there also are slow parts. The melodies usually are lively, in an atmosphere typical of a soundtrack for an adventure movie. This is a fresh and innovative album, which no doubt will contribute to increasing the reputation of the artist. The most impressive piece in the album is, in my opinion, "Nimbostratus".
Carsten Volmer / Germany
One thing is for sure, Synth.nl has a great website dedicated to his music. Michel van Osenbruggen offers you plenty of material to learn more about his project. An extensive biography, download links of interviews (with audio from both his releases), behind the scene pictures / stories of his huge studio packed with impressive hardware, links to different blogs with more detailed info and links to other artists (a very interesting list). It is really worth to pay a visit. Influenced by 80s synthesizer music, Synth.nl most inspiring artists are among his top friends on Myspace. To name a few: Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Kitaro. Synth.nl started composing and producing music in 2005. The first album .Aerodynamics. was released in 2007 and dealt with the aerodynamic aspect of racing cars and airplanes. For this second album inspiration came by the atmosphere around planet Earth. The songs are inspired by the different layers of air around the world, the different cloud formations that are encountered in these layers and the sounds of different weather phenomena. Sampling a lot of sounds himself (thunder storms, rain, wind etc), proves again the man puts a lot of effort in producing his music. It is recommended to listen to the album using headphones and for sure you will be grabbed by the beautiful, modern sounding, floating synthesizer sequences. This music sounds retro futuristic, cosmic, melancholic. It took me quite a while to spot the most outstanding songs on the album. At first sight it seems the album is one elaborated dream sequence, but after a few listening sessions I was able to pick out my favorites. Strikingly enough it were the tracks with the more prominent 'lead' melodies: 'Stratosphere' and 'Thermosphere', although 'Atmosphere' is built up with beautiful chords as well. The cristal clear sound quality is highly relevant for this kind of music and without a doubt Synth.nl gathers its place among the bigger names in synthesizerland.

Michel van Osenbruggen (Synth.NL) 2nd album is inspired by the layers of atmospheres which surround our planet. A little in the same vein as its 1st opus, AeroDynamics, the Dutch synthesist continues to forge energetic music with catchy rhythms. Atmosphere offers a beautiful range with a touch closer to nebulas atmospheres than cosmic one, as we found on AeroDynamics. A new kind of progressive synth pop with a heavy approach. Troposphere is fomented like a grain in space. A train comes from nowhere and releases heteroclite sound effects. The ambiance is cosmic, except for fine cymbals which initiate a percussion set more vigorous, in a cosmic sphere with Mellotron chorus and light hazes. A syncopated sequence is melting agreeably in this space landscape, creating a sustained rhythm which girdles an active nebulosity. In a track, Synth.NL situates his music. Melodious and rhythmic, stuffed of heavy Mellotron which gives the impression to slow down the tempo. Heavy and dilly-dally Troposphere, just like Cumulonimbus which seems to be his remix, rebound in the tympanums with an amazing sound richness. Atmosphere abounds of these titles with vaporous and climatic intros which lead to frank and vigorous rhythms, with a Jean Michel Jarre touch. Titles like Troposphere, Altocumulus, the excellent Altostratus and the very Jarrian Exosphere with his delightful violins, exploit chipped sequences on percussions very well freshened and on melodious synth. Some great cosmic candy, intelligent and appealing. Stratosphere intro plunges us into a cosmic static broth which is animating softly on circular cymbals and a hiccupping sequence which surrounds a movement hardly rhythmic. Melodious, the synth floats wistfully whereas the title immerses in a black mood with, in background, the initial melody which floats more than agitating. One of the more ambient tracks we find on this album, along with Thermosphere and Cirrostratus which always oscillate between the fragmented nebulosity and rhythms. Atmosphere is more elaborate. A soft rotary sequence with a Mellotron choral insufflates a soft melody that dry strike of percussions does not manage to spoil. A good track, like the majority that composes Synth.NL 2nd opus. Synth pop with a more progressive touch, like Mesosphere and its long synth solos and Nimbostratus with its dramatico-cosmic approach. If you have like AeroDynamics, AtmosPhere will not disappoint you. A strong album in rhythm and which brushes the roots of ambient EM does not go unperceived. There is a strong Jarre influence, in particular on percussions and synthesized refrains which bite easily the ear. A good album for fans of pop synth, with great percussions moves and well builds orchestrations.
Artemi Pugachov / Encyclopedia of Electronic Music
This album by Dutch artist Michel van Osenbruggen is dedicated to the atmosphere of our planet Earth and each track is named after a specific gas layer above the surface, starting from the lower ("Troposphere") and going up right until "Exosphere", where the gas molecules are so sparse that it is almost like outer space already. Some tracks are named after specific types of clouds. The first track begins with whooshing wind and subtle synth effects. Little by little a nice relaxed rhythm develops and a nice melody is played by a Mellotron-like choir. A louder, symphonic theme dominates the second part of this track. Nice relaxed stuff. "Cumulonimbus" begins with subtle rain effects and a mysterious synth theme. A laidback rhythm starts, joined by tinkling sequences. A somewhat melancholic theme is introduced, but everything then calms down for an atmospheric section, dominated by great synth effects. The rhythm returns after a few seconds as the main theme reappears towards the end. "Stratosphere" begins with excellent synthesizer effects - very atmospheric (no pun intended). A rhythm slowly develops among the sparkling clusters of synths. A rather serene melodic theme is then introduced. The track is rather upbeat but is nevertheless quite relaxing. The theme that comes after 3 minutes is very effective. And it's rather unique, too. Synth.nl certainly has his own style. One can hear various influences in Michel's music but the overall sound and presentation are fairly unique. "Stratocumulus" begins with some effects and a simple bass sequence. A rhythm starts, joined by phased pads. A rather melancholic theme played by a violin-like synth patch is introduced. The track then gets quite spacey and serene, with symphonic melodic synths all over. "Altocumulus" starts in a symphonic way with mucho pads and synth effects. This is bright and yet somewhat melancholic stuff. An upbeat rhythm starts, as the track brings in some decidedly Jarre-like flair to the proceedings, with strident melodic themes alternating between the atmospheric and the full-blown epicness. The sequences are present but are not dominating. The title track begins with echoing synthesizers and rain sounds. Very soon, a sequence develops and the rhythm then joins the proceedings, with choirs, bass synths and various pads being the main melodic ingredients. Again, it's a bit similar to Jarre without sounding derivative. An excellent solo appears in the second half of this track. "Mesopshere" is the most mysterious-sounding track so far. All kinds of bell-like synths and a phased pad (ala "Oxygene") provide a rich backbone upon which a nice melodic theme is installed. The track then transforms into a rhythm / melody combination that's as effective as ever. Michel really knows how to write good themes. Some of the bubbling synth effects are taken straight out of "Equinoxe". "Nimbostratus" was inspired by the dullest of cloud - you know, the sort of grayish type of cloud that covers the entire sky and brings continuous snow or drizzling rain. A bass sequence is joined by yet another resonant pulsation, as the synth pads sound fairly melancholic. There are also some great unusual synth sounds. It is nice to see that Michel actually spends time programming his synths, without resorting to the factory presets. There are a lot of rain effects throughout this track. A slight Classical (Baroque) influence creeps in towards the end before it all returns to the spacey synth melody / pad / rhythm formula. "Altostratus" sounds a bit mysterious with a touch of menace. Some expertly programmed sequences appear on this track. The synths are superfat and the stereo field is used to its maximum, with various sounds and spacey effects appearing around you all the time. "Thermosphere" is introduced with radio chatter beneath a menacing pad. Soon, some bright sequences develop, as the same type of rhythm that dominated a lot of the tracks on this album appears. An excellent melodic theme enters. And again I cannot resist the Jarre comparison. Mind you, it's not a copy, far from it, but that's what comes to my mind. "Cirrostratus" is next. Synths as airy as said clouds are lulling you and inspire you with their cosmic chant. Excellent melodic sequences are joined by silky pads. Beautiful, beautiful and once again, beautiful, both melodically and sonically. Absolutely cosmic, serene, airy, crystal clear, it feels like you are floating in the air, leaving the earth behind. "Exosphere" is the last track, as we are approaching space in our journey through our planet's atmosphere. Out-there effects and are joined by menacing synths. A relaxed rhythm begins, as the arrangements are relatively sparse on this track, consisting mostly of a melodic line, some additional sounds & textures and subtle bass. "AtmoSphere" is a nice album of melodic and spacey EM that should appeal to most EM fans. Best track: "Cirrostratus" - there's nothing like it.

Hello all! Now I have the new album AtmoSphere from SYNTH.NL and I will like to give an opinion to this: The design of the cover is 'atmospheric' and in the booklet you will find a description of the spheres, clouds and weather around our planet, which in this album the song-titles are. Great idea! You can find also some specifications about SYNTH.NL and this album. I hear this album in my car and in my living room at the dolby-surround-system. The sound of the album is great, but you must hear this album with a good headphone, because SYNTH.NL hid many details in the songs, that you can hear much better with headphones. I hear it now to fourth time and I think I did not find any detail anymore now. The synths and the self sampled sounds that SYNTH.NL use in the songs are fantastic. The wide Pads, the Leads, Basses and Drums carry me from the earth's surface. The songs are very good arranged and they have very much alternation. My result about this album: If you like electronic music, like Jean Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze and so on, and if you want to dive into a relaxed world, you must buy this album.
Phil Derby / Electroambient Space
AtmoSphere is more playful upbeat melodious synth music from Michel van Osenbruggen. Whereas AeroDynamics was based on the theme of motion, this time van Osenbruggen has his head in the clouds, quite literally, going through the many levels of earth's atmosphere. Starting in the 'Troposphere' the music is appropriately, uh, atmospheric of course. Though it is floaty it is also thoroughly electronic, with just the right tribal touches as well. It progresses smoothly from a mellow to a more upbeat sound, with solid sequencing and melodic synth leads. 'Cumulonimbus' starts appropriately with distant thunder and an ominous mood, though it turns light and bouncy as well. There is a Jarre-like playfulness here and on the next track 'Stratosphere', but Osenbruggen carves out his own sound and style within the genre. Sometimes there is a more majestic tone, often right in the middle of otherwise toe-tapping tracks, but transitions are deftly handled. I sometimes found his debut a little too playful and light, but AtmoSphere shows more restraint and maturity in the compositions which works to its advantage. Even when tracks do get a little sweeter, as on 'Stratocumulus' and 'Altocumulus', it seldom if ever carries things too far on the cute or cheesy scale. When I'm in the mood for the lighter melodic side of EM, AtmoSphere will be a disc I will reach for often.

Colored images of quickly moving and transforming clouds appear with the first chords of the album 'AtmoSphere' by Synth.nl. Its music is very vivid and visual. And yet, it is very strong and well-composed. Michel van Osenbruggen (a.k.a. Synth.nl) creates the project in the best traditions of European electronic music. It recalls Tangerine Dream and in the whole the best releases of famous Berlin School. On the other hand Michel van Osenbruggen's music is penetrated with the spirit of romanticism (like compositions of Jean-Michel Jarre). 'AtmoSphere' is the second album of Michel van Osenbruggen. His synthesizer's melodies amaze by clearness of musical palette. The artist masterfully weaves the sounds of thunder storms, rain and wind into his music. And it is a very melodious and full of aerial harmonies. Also, Michel van Osenbruggen's music has a strong dramatic effect. Synth.nl is undoubtedly a new bright project not only on the European but also on the world electronic music scene.

To start off words cant even compliment this fabulous cd. The theme seems to be very mysterious. Bright synth pads, cruising sequencer lines, driving percussion and drums. The bass lines alone deserve credit alone, i can say wow, the thumping gets your feet tapping. A lot of EM artists these days seems to be queued on a certain sound which makes it quite boring and not at all interesting. Michel however seems to create his music in a way that you will want to play it over and over again without being boring. Track 6 is loaded with choirs, what a fantastic piece. Not to mention every one is awesome. Berlin School this isn't, but exciting, interesting, modern EM this is. Great job Michel, keep the great music coming.

Take a cruise journey through different weather patterns and storms, The CD title really lives up to it's name, I met Michel van Osenbruggen on Myspace and at the time Analogy vol.3 was released, But then came Aerodynamics and track 12- Lift just blew my mind, His synth work has mellowed here to a more swooning journey through all 4 seasons of the year with smooth rockin melodies.

October 11th, 2008 saw the release of the second album of Dutch synthesist Synth.nl, aka Michel van Osenbruggen, a concept-cd inspired by the layers of air in the atmosphere surrounding our globe. Listening to the 12 tracks (ranging between four and seven minutes) feels like an relaxed journey, offering a nice range of fresh sound pads, fx's, (sampled) environmental sounds and sequencer lines, spiced up by drums and percussion. I feel, Michel has brought more rest and expression to his music compared to the outcome on his debut "AeroDynamics". It sound solid and mature to my ears, the solo's have more expression and the music sounds transparent and worked up all the way. Especially 'Stratosphere' is an encompassing, warm and uplifting travelogue up the sky. The slight influence of Jarre can be noticed on various spots on the album, but Michel's moody music expertly pursues its own direction, delivering its own thing to accesible synthesizer music. All in all, Michel did a very fine job on 'AtmoSphere'. I trust Synth.nl will go far for sure.

Behind the modern and recognisable artist name Synth.nl is the Dutchman Michel van Osenbruggen. On his first album 'AeroDynamics' he managed to mix two of his big passions into a very interesting musical bag: Formula 1 racing (watching) and electronic music. 'AtmoSphere' is again a concept-album. The twelve songs are inspired by the different layers of air around our world; the various cloud formations that are encountered in these layers, and the sounds of different weather phenomena. The album opens in 'Troposphere' with a slight homage to the great artists that came before him, like Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. 'Cumulonimbus' has a wonderful film-like melody. The mentioned drive can be heard very well in pieces like 'Stratocumulus', 'Nimbostratus', 'Altostratus' and 'Thermosphere' that again could have been made for a film. Michel is also capable of creating some great sequences. That can be heard in the warm 'Cirrostratus' and 'Exosphere'. He has a nice and fluent playing style. It is a wonderful thing to hear that artists are developing themselves. Michel certainly does. With the approach of mixing electronic music with clever concepts, he might become an important name in 'EM'.

This release from 2008 offers 71 minutes of pleasant electronic music. Synth.nl is Michel van Osenbruggen. He is joined by Hans Landman, who plays most of the lead lines in one track. A study of the planetary atmosphere, voyaging from the ground to outer space and examining the various cloud formations and weather conditions that dwell within that gas envelope. One might expect this music to be airily ambient, but it possesses a suitable degree of rhythm and lively melody. The electronics exhibit a chugging quality, comprised of cyclic pulsations that churn amid a foundation of atmospheric textures. Keyboard triggered riffs float with undulant disposition. What seems to be an elegant simplicity in structure is actually a pleasant complexity achieved as the sonic threads intermingle and merge into a pacific flow. Most of the sounds are light and airy, excellently conveying a sense of gaseous certification. There are instances wherein deeper tones are employed, injecting a touch of drama to the fanciful whimsy. E-perc defines languid rhythms which provide soothing locomotion to the melodies. The beats are soft and understated so as not to disrupt the music.s delicate character. Environmental samples of a meteorological nature are utilized to lend the electronic pastiches a terrestrial flavor. These compositions manage to be simultaneously spry and calming. The activity found within these songs displays a meticulous restraint, never going overt or reaching a hyperactive pace, while the passivity is deceptively lush, exploring melodic realms too substantial to be considered ambient. The result is a selection of affable tuneage crafted with delicate intentions.
Mark Jenkins
Synth.NL is Michel van Osenbruggen whose debut CD was inspired by the subject of Formula 1 racing - so you'd have thought that tracks inspired by different atmospheric layers and cloud formations would have been a little more relaxing. Far from it - Michel find lots of turbulence and disruption here, so the swooshing and swirling noises soon give way to rolling sequences and forceful drums as well as abstract sound effects. There.s more information here on different types of cloud formation than there is on the keyboards used (though lots of Korg T1 patches are in evidence) but there's a good mix of rich analog sound, sampled vocal noises giving some hints of Enigma or Enya, drum machines, rolling arpeggio patterns and choral swirls. Possibly not such a varied album as his debut, but still an enjoyable listen.

2007 AeroDynamics Album

Groove Unlimited / NL
Press Information
Synth.nl is new in the world of Electronic Music. Behind this modern and recognizable artist name is the Dutchman Michel van Osenbruggen. On his first album 'AeroDynamics' he manages to mix two of his big passions into a very interesting musical whole: Formula 1 racing (well, Michel doesn't race himself but he watches the races with great love and anticipation) and Electronic Music. The 12 tracks on 'AeroDynamics' are not only inspired by cars but also by planes where Michel has a special feeling for as well (he was once an F16-mechanic), especially the aerodynamics of the machines. Cars and planes go fast. 'Fast' is also an idea the listener to 'AeroDynamics' might have because most of the compositions have a certain 'drive'. The music is rhythmically done cleverly and played with much emphasis on melodies. Let's say, this could be the music that Jean Michel Jarre might have created nowadays. That can be heard very well on tracks like 'DownForce' that has a great base melody, 'Drag', 'Turbulence' in which also modern day Tangerine Dream greets and 'Modena' that has an euphoric overall feeling. In the relaxing 'Stall' the rhythms are scaled down a little. In contrast, fans of danceable music are also invited to 'AeroDynamics' because a lot of the numbers have moments where the feet cannot be held on the ground. Within the world of Electronic Music which is primarily one of ambient and Berlin Schoolsequences, Michel's work is a welcome new and fresh style.

One of the most acclaimed Groove releases of recent years, this one's inspired by motor racing and so at least has some kind of theme to follow through the course of the CD. Here we're looking at a delightful mix of Jean-Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk (though as usual with no vocals) created by Dutch keyboardist Michel van Osenbruggen, with the opening "Scuderia" laced with racing car noises, the bouncy "Maranello" layering thumping Techno drums under a sweeping melody part, and much use throughout of sweeping flanger and phaser effects to represent the effects of wind and rain on the speeding motor vehicles. Just the sort of thing you'd hear used on a TV documentary about motor sports, well produced with a good powerful sound mix and even, dare it be said, a touch of humor in its mixture of music and sound effects.

Aerodynamics is a brilliant piece of work...the best CD i have heard by ANYONE in the last few years...brilliantly composed, recorded, and produced...nice work michel...am already itching for your next release...

And from the truly inspired imaginings of Synth.nl (aka Michel van Osenbruggen), we have the debut album worthy of some praise and appreciation. I love the very wisely selective use of sequencers and inserts... there's a love of music here that stretches right back to the heart of the late seventies/eighties and comes skipping relentlessly back to now. Production is rather neat indeed and I know as a MySpace Flight Commander, Michel is adored by the electronic consuming masses! Watch out for the Jarre reflections; they're well composed and arranged and make you want to take a nice long break to the other half of the sky where this album originates from. My favourite little pieces of magic are delivered in the form of 'Scuderia', 'DownForce', 'AeroDynamics', and 'Falcon' (an appreciation of my kind of avionics!). In fact... Falcon is my all time favourite so far... but the other tracks I didn't highlight are gnawing at me for a second play! I love this album and I do not care what anyone else has to say.. It's mine now... all mine... Thanks Michel!

Hi Michel! "Aerodynamics" came in the mail today, and I LOVE IT! I'd like to start by saying that there is not one good track on this entire CD. They are all EXCELLENT! It has been a long time since I have been this excited about an album/CD. Every track on 'Aerodynamics' is bursting with energy. The theme of the CD is the aerodynamic aspects relating to planes and race cars, etc., and I find the liner notes to be very interesting. There are twelve tracks in all, and there is a brief description of every piece, what inspired it, and even an education of the aerodynamic terms that are used for titles, which I find to be quite interesting. There is also a brief bio of Michel van Osenbruggen -a.k.a. Synth.nl- and a short description of where the theme of the album came from. Every CD should come with an insert like this one, and the album cover artwork is nothing short of phenomenal. Also, it comes packaged in a nice hard-plastic case. I like that. There are no slower pieces on the entire sixty-eight plus minutes of 'Aerodynamics', as they would not be in keeping with the theme. That's OK though, as every piece on the CD is polished to *PERFECTION,* and the stereo surround sound is exactly as it should be. I have NEVER before heard surround sound production quality like this. Ever. The sounds and tone colors used by Synth.nl are those that can only be produced by a synthesizer, i.e. there are no samples of acoustic instruments present here, which personally I like. Synthesizer music in it's truest form.

This has to be one of the best EM cds of the year, no doubt. First track very reminiscent of JMJ, the rest, JMJ on steroids, the music that is. I also put David Morleys : Ghosts up there with this one as well as Create: Space Time Continuum, and FSP: Gent, Brendan Pollard: Flux Echoes, i know i missed alot others but just to give you an idea. Sound production and mastering have to be amongst the best i have ever heard. Michel did a fascinating job, building each track into something spectacular, but each piece is different in its own. Everything from the sequencing, drum programming, synth solos , f/x, and sampling are all excellent, you would think he made 20 cds by now, considering the high quality put into this project. Some EM these days lacks quality, you obviously can tell when someone puts their heart and soul into a project like this and Michel certainly did. Great Job Michel

Michel van Osenbruggen is the man behind the name Synth.nl. Here's a relative newcomer to the music scene since he only started making music in 2005. He's been influenced by a lot of the big names in synth music such as J.M. Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk etc. AeroDynamics is inspired by the aero dynamics of both cars and planes; these inspirations can be found in the liner notes which have a brief description of the background to each track. Watery percussion and the whine of Formula One racing cars zooming by are our intro to the album in 'Scuderia'. A build up of volume and intensity leads into the main passage of rippling sequencers and energetic melodies. All the tracks are rhythmic sequencer based, ranging from adrenalin inducing pieces such as .Scuderia. to the slightly chilled out .Stall.. The hum of a propeller alongside chittering percussion begin this piece before a pleasing melody comes in winding across the soundscape while pads and other sonic accessories fill out the backdrop. I particularly like the free feeling of this track as though one is in a light plane playfully swooping around the sky. The title track 'AeroDynamics' is one of the racier foot tapping tracks with lots of fast percussion and rhythms. The overlayed melodies aren't anything special but help the musical momentum. In the slower interludes electronic music aficionados may notice a refrain which is surely a nod to Vangelis's Heaven and Hell. AeroDynamics is enjoyable but one of those albums where no track really stands out, yet it doesn't contain any bad pieces either. This music is brighter than much of the sequence based offerings from the Groove label, and in this respect reminds me of Indra's upbeat work.
Chris Wood, NL
First of all, I want to congratulate Synth.nl with his very first album. The cd tracks sound very refreshing to me. I like the racetrack-samples he used very much. They really give something special to the song. While listening the CD over and over again, you will find a real cohesion or chemistry between the tracks. Sure, I do have my own favorite tracks but that's personal. You have to listen to it to discover. I can't wait for the next album and I want to give Michel a lot of positive power for his next production. Thumbs up. One thing more. The cover, which I like, is something personal. You like it, or you don't. But it doesn't say anything about the music. Like a painting, the frame is just a choice of finishing touch, what counts is the painting itself. You have to look through it. It is a really good product so I would say, buy it!!!
Edgar Kogler, Amazings.com
The music by Synth.nl submerges us into a waterfall of vitality and dynamism. Starting from a basis with roots in the Synth-Pop and the most futuristic trends of Techno, the composer shapes a solid collection of themes that gather several of his most personal influences. In the CD, the listener can perceive, for example, subtle touches of Space Music, Progressive Rock and Electronic Jazz.

I just finished reviewing a very dark ambient album, and was in need of a fast antidote. I quickly reached for the new disc by new talent Synth.nl, a Dutch musician by the name of Michel van Osenbruggen. I had already listened to it a couple of times, and knew that it would be the perfect way to get my energy back. This is totally fun, upbeat, optimistic music. The album.s title derives from van Osenbruggen's love of planes, cars, and other aerodynamic phenomena. We get to hear race cars whizzing by in the opening seconds of the opening track, 'Scuderia'. Bass synth pulses and skittering percussion set a light tone as bright glassy electronics ensue. Synth.nl lists Jean Michel Jarre as an influence, and that is felt and heard here, a really fun way to start the album. 'DownForce' cools things down with a relaxed, easy listening number. The emphasis throughout is on catchy melodies and rhythms, presented in a way that goes down easy.' Many are playful, such as the bouncy 'Maranello'. Some slow things down a bit, like the relaxed tunes 'Drag' and 'Stall', whereas others keep things moving briskly such as fast-paced sequencing of 'SuperSonic', 'Turbulence', and the particularly ebullient title track. It would be virtually impossible to be down while listening to AeroDynamics.

A Ferrari over Mars! How does it sound to you? Syncopate rhythms which roll on beautiful involving sequences! Does that interest you? Here AeroDynamics, the 1st opus from the Dutch synthesist Michel Van Osenbruggen. As much to say it first, you won.t find complex sequences, nor long atmospheric passages. No, Synth.nl is from Jean Michel Jarre (new grinding) school, Moonbooter and a punchy zest of Kraftwerk. So rhythm, lot of rhythm with solid percussions on unbridles sequences. With a title like Scuderia, we are not surprise to hear tires bitten vacuum as intro. The tempo is easily install on beautiful stroboscopic sequences and a synth with spacey atmospheres, which encircle a musical setting worthy of the last Jean Michel Jarre. Involving and percussive, Scuderia represents perfectly the musical mood that follows with the 12 other titles on AeroDynamics. Superb melodies with sequences animated of sensuality like Downforce, Stall and AirFlow, are scattered among strong nevrotic impulses such as Drag, Turbulence and Falcon. Admittedly, there are moments with strange and doubtful atmospheres, as the title track, Modena and Lift, but they are quickly packed of frantic tempo which strikes the walls from their jerked effects and musical resonance, though Lift remains rather quiet compared to the remainder. Simple, but brilliantly effective, AeroDynamics is an album of EM which revolves between the zones of a moderate Techno and short floating ambiances which encircle syncopate tempos, sometimes unbridle. If you like an intelligent music which strikes audacity neurotics sequencers, Synth.nl's AeroDynamics is simply indicated to you.

This release from 2007 offers 68 minutes of fleet electronic music. Synth.nl is Michael van Osenbruggen. Energetic electronics flourish here, creating engaging tunes peppered with sliding punctuations and chugging rhythms. A versatility is present in the electronics. Airy textures roil at the edges, evoking the impression that each song is zooming along. Crystalline chords swirl with jubilant resolve, generating a mood of amiable comfort. Sharper riffs are triggered by nimble-fingered keyboards, establishing an invigorating effervescence. Deeper tones are utilized to provide a grounding element for the rest of the sounds, enhancing the overall sense of determined movement. The snappy percussion helps to maintain the melodies constant motion, allowing no pause in the breathless flow. The rhythms are tastefully integrated into the mix in a manner that renders the beats into a contributory role rather than a driving force. This generation of this music was inspired by van Osenbruggen.s interest in racing cars and swift aircraft. A sense of velocity is dominant in the compositions. Bouncy melodies are established and then seasoned with sprightly embellishments that expertly communicate an aerodynamic quality to the listener. While speed plays a factor, the music is not hyperactive, transmitting rapidity through emotional impact instead of a frantic pace.
Bert Strolenberg / Sonicimmersion.org
The musician behind Synth.Nl is the Dutchman Michel van Osenbruggen, who started recording music for his concept album "AeroDynamics" in 2006. Although I can.t say the cd-cover to it is that attractive to me, the twelve tracks on the disc speak their own language. It.s a nice collection of mellow-melodic pieces with proper portioned rhythms which all sound very honest and open. They are not that fancy, but still well done, sometimes even slightly leaning towards techno/dance kindred music, this due to his fast sequencing style. Especially the first half of the cd creates a very nice mellow and relaxed mood, in which the energizing sounds of racing cars and machines pass by in the sound spectrum. "Modena" is a weak track in my opinion, lacking composition and sounding a bit too simple compared to the others, although the title track coming after it isn.t that strong either. Nevertheless, Synth.nl is a welcome name in the genre of electronic music, as I.m sure lots of fans will be pleased by his straightforward and warm sounding music. (Remixing and mastering credits go out to no other than Ron Boots)
